What is a corn?

A corn on the foot is a small, thickened area of skin that develops due to friction or pressure, often from ill-fitting shoes or repetitive motions. It typically forms on the tops or sides of the toes, or on the soles of the feet. Corns are the body's way of protecting itself from irritation. They usually appear as hardened, yellowish bumps and can be painful, especially when pressed on.

There are two types of corns:

  • Hard corns: These are the most common type and usually form on the top or side of the toes. They tend to be small, circular, and can be very painful when pressure is applied.
  • Soft corns: These are typically found between the toes and are softer due to the moisture in that area. They often appear white or grayish.

Treatment for corns includes using padding, wearing properly fitting shoes, and soaking the feet to soften the corns. They can be removed by a Footcare Specialist. However, it's important not to try cutting or removing corns yourself, as this can lead to infection or injury.
